This is my home page. My name is Charles Reid and I am a Ph.D. student at the University of Utah.
Programming and Computers
Much of my work and many of my hobbies involve computers. I use a variety of different tools, and I have included pages for the various languages, operating systems, and programs that I use. These are included below.
Languages/Protocols
I use the document typesetting language LaTeX, usually through a nice front-end like LyX.
My Ph.D. research revolves around a CFD code written in C++.
I also use Python, which is an interesting mix of immediately-interpreted shell languages like Bash and Matlab, and more complex, object-oriented codes like C++.
Stuff I Use
I have compiled a list of Programs I Use. This page should cover most of the programs I use for basic day-to-day operations.
I compile programs from source code whenever possible, as I believe it leads to (a) a much better understanding of the amount of work that went into creating that program, (b) much less confusion about what configuration files go where, and for what, and (c) discourages the use of Windows.
To create this webpage, I did some hacking with MediaWiki.
Operating systems
My primary operating system is Mac OS X (Leopard), I own an older-model MacBook Pro.
I also run a Linux computer, specifically running Ubuntu, version 8-something, I think.
I avoid Windows like the plague, but it's a Windows world. So, I keep a version of Windows in a small cage (commonly referred to as a VirtualBox) and only let it out when necessary.
